Water Conservation Strategies

The project intends to realign how people use water and to redefine “waste” in the built environment so that water is respected as a precious resource. Watershed incorporates sustainable water strategies in three important ways:

  • Capturing > 50% of on-site rainwater and recycling it for non-potable uses in the building.
  • Reducing potable water use within the building by 75% compared to a standard building.
  • Capturing and cleaning ~ 400,000 gallons of stormwater (see before and after below).

Water Conservation Features

  • Large overhanging roof, expressive channels and downspouts
  • Weathering steel water feature at the cistern entry
  • Treated rainwater used in toilets and urinals
  • Aurora Bridge stormwater routed through bioswales
  • Occupied deck stormwater routed through bioswales
  • Treated stormwater sent to Lake Union

Combined Annual Potable Water Use

This is a snapshot of Watershed’s total potable water use over the past 12 months compared to the 75% reduction potable water target for the Living Building Pilot Program. Tracking began in April of 2021. The target is the monthly average of the annual goal.
